It’s not us and them. It’s only us.

Please listen to the song "Finale B" #42 on the Rent soundtrack on this page. Let the words sink in.

Do you have a gay friend?
Do you have a straight friend?
Do you have a transgendered friend?
Do you have a Muslim friend?
Do you have a Mormon friend?
Do you have a Palestinian friend?
Do you have a Puerto Rican friend?
Do you have a South African friend?
Do you have a Russian friend?
Do you have an atheist friend?
Do you have an agnostic friend?
Do you have a Republican friend?
Do you have a Democrat friend?
Do you have an African American friend?
Do you have a refugee friend?
Do you have a disabled friend?
Do you have a Mexican friend?
Do you have a Spanish friend?
Do you have a Portuguese friend?
Do you have an American friend?
Do you have a Canadian friend?

I must just be damn lucky, cuz I have at least one of each of these friends, and more that I’ve forgotten to list. I have these friends and I love them all. I want happiness, freedom, and social justice for all of them.  I don’t care that we’re all unique and a little weird. I do care that we’re all human and deserve the same respect.

There is no us and them. There’s only us.

The divisiveness of the current election is making me not only sad, but very anxious. The battles are being fought as us and them. There is no us and them. There’s only us.
